Charles throws down Irminsul, the Saxon pagan idol
Fresco by Alfred Rethel for the Aachen Rathaus (1840s). Irminsul is here a sort of totem pole, lying broken under the power of Christianity and the Franks. From an impressive fresco series on Charlemagne's life painted in the Aachen Rathaus by Aachen native Alfred Rethel. I seek better images of the series. If you know where they can be found, please let me know.
