Charlemagne is crowned Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III: Alfred Rethel
Fresco by Alfred Rethel for the Aachen Rathaus (1846). This follows Einhard's account in having Charlemagne surpised at prayer by the Pope, placing a crown on his head from behind! This view downplays any connotation that the Papacy has authority over the emperors.
