Charlemagne
accepts the submission of Widukind, Saxon chief
Painting by Ari Scheffer, hanging in the Galerie des Batailles in Versailles,
for which it was commissioned in 1846 by King Louis Philippe. Romantic, nationalist
view of Charles, surrounded by soldiers and bishops, bringing Christianity and
Frankish rule to the Saxon peoples—in reality a long and bitter conflict
that lasted most of Charles' reign.
