Reliquary
Casket: Pseudo-Turpin panel: the Milky Way
From a series of panels depicting the 'Pseudo-Turpin' legend of Charlemagne's
conquest of Spain, on the upper part of his reliquary casket at Aachen. Charlemagne,
dreaming, has a vision of Saint James, who tells him that the Saint's relics will
be found by following the celestial sign of the Milky Way to Compostela (literally
the 'field of stars') in Galicia.
